Some of that exploration took place in the Special Protection Area of Campo de Montiel (ES0000158), home to large populations of Iberian imperial eagles, Bonelli's eagles and steppe birds, which, along with the little bustard, the great bustard, the pin-tailed sandgrouse, the black-bellied sandgrouse and the lesser kestrel, also found in that area, are endangered species of Community interest.

Parte de dichas actividades se realizaron dentro de la ZEPA «Áreas de Aves Esteparias del Campo de Montiel» (ES0000158), con una importante población de águilas imperial, ibérica y perdicera, y de aves esteparias de interés comunitario y amenazadas como el sisón, la avutarda, la ganga, la ortega y el cernícalo primilla.
