Es wurde 1962 von der aus South Carolina stammenden Sylvia Woods gegründet und bestand zunächst aus nur einem Tresen und ein paar Tischen. Inzwischen hat es sich vergrößert und ist zu einer legendären Institution geworden, in der schon solche Grössen wie Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton und Magic Johnson gegessen haben. Nichts von dem wäre natürlich von Bedeutung wenn es nicht die Wasser im Munde zusammenlaufende Küche gäbe, die sowohl bei New Yorkern als auch bei Touristen begeisternde Lobesreden erntet.

Founded in 1962 by South Carolina transplant Sylvia Woods, the restaurant originally consisted of little more than a counter and a few booths, but has since expanded to become the legendary institution that played host to Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, and Magic Johnson, among countless other luminaries. None of this history would matter, of course, if it weren’t for the mouth-watering cuisine that consistently draws rave reviews from both native New Yorkers and tourists alike.
