It was said to have been named after the Greek town of Aegae ; after Aegea , a queen of the Amazons who died in the sea; Aigaion, the "sea goat", another name of Briareus , one of the archaic Hecatonchires ; or, especially among the Athenians, Aegeus , the father of Theseus , who drowned himself in the sea when he thought his son had died.

대개는 그리스의 한 도시이던 아이가이 혹은 이 바다에서 죽었다는 아마조네스 의 여왕 아이게아(Aegea)의 이름을 땄다고도 하며, 혹은 백 개의 손을 가진 브리아레오스 의 다른 이름인 "바다 염소" 아이가이온(Aigaion)에서 나온 말이라고도 하며, 특히 아테네인들 사이에서는 테세우스 의 아버지인 아이게우스 가 아들이 죽은 줄 착각하고 이 바다에 투신하여 그 이름에서 유래했다고 보기도 한다.
