Following a careful analysis of the current and likely international security environment, the UK Government set out its conclusions in a White Paper entitled 'The Future of the United Kingdom's Nuclear Deterrent', published in December 2006. It concluded that there were still risks to UK security from emerging nuclear states and that the UK's security was best guaranteed through the continued operation of a submarine-based nuclear deterrent.
