The present invention relates to a composition for preventing and treating diabetes complications containing Litsea japonica extract or fractions thereof as an active ingredient, and more particularly, to Litsea japonica extract or fractions thereof for suppressing the generation of an advanced glycation end product, which is an indicator of diabetes complications, and the activity of aldose reductase, preventing diabetic eye diseases (diabetic cataract and retinopathy) that are early symptoms of diabetes complications and the loss of podocytes, wherein decreasing expression of nephrin, which is a slit diagram protein that plays an important role in podocyte functions, is suppressed in particular, thereby rendering the present invention useful as the active ingredient in the composition for preventing and treating diabetes complications including diabetic nephropathy.

본 발명은 까마쪽나무(Litsea japonica) 추출물 또는 이의 분획물을 유효성분으로 함유하는 당뇨합병증 예방 및 치료용 조성물에 관한 것으로서, 더욱 구체적으로는, 까마쪽나무 추출물 또는 이의 분획물은 당뇨합병증의 지표인 최종당화산물의 생성 및 알도즈 환원효소의 활성을 억제하며, 당뇨 합병증 초기 증세인 당뇨성 안구질환(백내장 및 망막증) 및 발세포(podocyet) 소실을 예방하며, 특히 발세포 기능에 중요한 역할을 하는 슬릿 디아그램(slit diagram) 단백질인 네프린(Nephrin)의 발현 감소를 억제하므로, 당뇨성 신증 등 당뇨합병증 예방 및 치료용 조성물의 유효성분으로서 유용하게 이용될 수 있다.
