The main difficulty with this is the impossibility of making this type of evaluation for a rock mass in its initial (undisturbed) state: the mechanical characteristics of rocks are currently determined under laboratory conditions using core material, and the only direct method of evaluating the initial stresses in a rock mass is the borehole hydrofracture method.

La principale difficulté pour y parvenir tient à l’impossibilité d’obtenir une évaluation des contraintes initiales (c’est-à-dire avant toute intervention humaine) d’une roche: les propriétés mécaniques d’une roche sont aujourd’hui étudiées en laboratoire, à partir de matériaux prélevés par carottage. La seule méthode d’évaluation directe des contraintes initiales est la fracturation hydraulique à l’aide de puits.
