The criteria for judging the fidelity of a translation vary according to the subject, type and use of the text, its literary qualities, its social or historical context, etc. The criteria for judging the transparency of a translation appear more straightforward: an unidiomatic translation "sounds wrong"; and, in the extreme case of word-for-word translations generated by many machine-translation systems, often results in patent nonsense.

El criterio para juzgar la fidelidad de una traducción varía de acuerdo al tema, al tipo y uso del texto, sus cualidades literarias, su contexto histórico y social, etc. El criterio para juzgar la transparencia de una traducción es aparentemente más claro: una traducción no idiomática «suena mal»; y, en el caso extremo de las traducciones «palabra a palabra» hechas por sistemas de traducción automática, generalmente resultan incoherentes.
