While I can’t speak for the former, I can say that the latter is mostly a myth, barring a few lucky cases. Most of the Nepalis I’ve come across in the UK live in below-average conditions, barely scraping by, not really able to afford the kind of luxuries—eating out, travelling, shopping at fancy stores—that one would imagine as part of English living. Wouldn’t they—at least those who would earn enough to have a house, enough to eat and educate their kids—be happier in Nepal, surrounded by the things they know and love? While spending a month and more in Nepal during my vacations last year, I definitely raised a few eyebrows among friends who were surprised to find that my resolution to come back had not ebbed with time. It’s not that there aren’t opportunities in the UK; us Nepalis are a hardworking lot, and that quality is certainly recognised and appreciated by employers overseas.

मेरो झन्डै २ दशकको अमेरिका बसाइमा न्युयोर्कमा ११ वर्षजति र बाँकी समय हाल क्यालिफोर्निया राज्यमा बित्दो छ । क्यालिफोर्नियाको विशाल आकार, प्रशान्त महासागर र मोहावी मरुभूमिबाहेक अरु कुरो हेर्ने हो भने नेपालसँग मिल्ने हिमाल, पहाड, तराई, वनजंगल सबै उस्तै छ । यात्रामा घरबाट बाहिर फुत्त निस्कनासाथ हराभरा वातावरण, कङल्याङ-कुङलुङ पहाडी बाटो, भञ्ज्याङ, उपत्यका, नदी, खाद्यान्न-फलफूलले लबालब समथर मैदान आदि देख्दा मलाई मेरो बाल्यकालको त्यो नेपालको झलझली याद आउंँछ ।
