According to this theory the Andes start at the border between Colombia and Venezuela; run along western South America; submerge into the Atlantic Ocean to the east of Tierra del Fuego to form the underwater Scotia Arc mountain range; resurface periodically in the Shag Rocs, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, South Orkney Islands and South Shetland Islands; and finally resurfacing on the northern Antarctic Peninsula.

De acuerdo con esta teoría, los Andes se inician en la frontera entre Colombia y Venezuela y se sumergen en el océano Atlántico al este de Tierra del Fuego formando la cordillera submarina llamada dorsal del Scotia, reapareciendo de a trechos en las islas Aurora, Georgias del Sur, Sandwich del Sur, Orcadas del Sur y Shetland del Sur, continuando luego en la península Antártica.
