A primary infection happens when plants already in the seedling stage are infected by oospores that have passed the winter in the soil. The infection then is systemic, the plans are stunted and large-scale malformations occur (pictures above). Secondary infections are caused by airborne conidia; these infections cause localised lesions on the leaves (photos below)

Primaire infectie ontstaat doordat de planten reeds als zaailing via de wortels besmet worden door oosporen die in de bodem hebben overwinterd. De aantasting is dan systemisch, de planten zijn als geheel verkommerd en de aantasting is grootschalig (als in de foto’s hierboven) Secundaire aantasting ontstaat op de bladeren door via de lucht aangevoerde conidia.
