It is produced around Yanagiu, Taihaku-ku, Sendai City and is said to have been started by paper craftsmen from Date (Fukushima Prefecture) who had been brought to the area by Date Masamune in the early middle ages. The robust paper, which is produced adding the tororoaoi root juice to the fiber of the kozo bark (broussonetia kajinoki), has been used for various daily objects, including paper lanterns, sliding paper screens, and wrapping paper, and it is also used for the Matsukawa daruma dolls which are famous for their colorfulness and intricate decoration.

센다이시 타이하쿠구의 야나기우 일대에서 생산되며, 근세 초기, 다테 마사무네가 불러 모은 다테군(후쿠이현)의 종이 뜨기 장인들이 시작하였다고 합니다. 닥나무 껍질에서 뽑아 낸 섬유에 토로로아오이의 뿌리 즙을 가해서 뜬 튼튼한 종이는, 초롱이나 창호지, 포장지 등 일상 속의 다양한 도구로 사용되어, 풍부한 색채와 공들인 장식으로 유명한 마츠카와 다루마의 소재로도 사용되어 왔습니다.
