Discontented with the hereditary system of allocating posts, the decline of the Dutch East India Company's Asian trade, unemployment in the textile industry and the desire of democratisation, the middle and upper classes looked towards the American Revolution and its Declaration of Independence and the Dutch Act of Abjuration and began to reclaim their rights (first written down in the 1579 Union of Utrecht).

Uit onvrede over het patronagestelsel waarin posten werden toegewezen, de neergang van de Aziatische handel van de VOC, werkloosheid in de textielindustrie en de wens tot democratisering, keken de midden- en bovenklasse op naar de Amerikaanse Revolutie en haar Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring en het Nederlandse Plakkaat van Verlatinghe en begonnen hun rechten (voor het eerste beschreven in de Unie van Utrecht uit 1579) opnieuw op te eisen.
