A method of modifying a surface characteristic of a stainless steel or cobalt-chromium (Co- Cr) based alloy article, comprising plasma surface co-alloying the article (such as by active screen plasma surface co-alloying), with both interstitial and substitutional alloying elements at a temperature in the range of from 300 to 600°C and at a pressure of from 100 to 1500 Pa for 1 to 50 hours in an atmosphere comprising N-containing, C-containing or N/C-containing gas.

L'invention concerne un procédé de modification d'une caractéristique superficielle d'un objet en acier inoxydable ou en alliage à base de cobalt-chrome (Co-Cr), comprenant un co-alliage superficiel au plasma de l'objet (tel que par co-alliage superficiel au plasma à écran actif), au moyen d'éléments d'alliage tant interstitiels que substitutionnels à une température dans la plage de 300 à 600°C et à une pression de 100 à 1500 Pa pendant 1 à 50 heures dans une atmosphère comprenant un gaz contenant N, contenant C ou contenant N/C.
