১৯৭৫ সালের ২৫শে জানুয়ারি শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান একদলীয় সমাজতান্ত্রিক দল, বাংলাদেশ কৃষক লীগ (বাকশাল) এর ঘোষণা দেন। বাকশাল সংবিধানের চতুর্থ সংশোধনী অনুসারে গঠিত হয়। রাষ্ট্রপতির নির্দেশ মোতাবেক, অন্য সমস্ত রাজনৈতিক দলকে নিষিদ্ধ করা হয়। বাংলাদেশের দ্বিতীয় বিপ্লব তত্ত্ব মোতাবেক এই দলটির মাধ্যমেই রাষ্ট্রের সমাজতন্ত্র গঠনের সূচনা হয়। বাকশাল মূলতঃ দ্বিতীয় বিপ্লবের লক্ষ্য পূরণে একটি সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণের দল ছিল। ১৯৭৫ সালের শেখ মুজিবের হত্যাকান্ডের মধ্য দিয়ে বাকশালের নিষ্পত্তি ঘটে।

On 25 January 1975, a single party socialist government was declared by Sheikh Mujib and Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League (BAKSAL) was formed through the fourth amendment of the constitution. All other political parties were outlawed with the formation of BAKSAL through a presidential order. The party advocated state socialism as a part of the group of reforms under the theory of Second Revolution. BAKSAL was the decision making council to achieve the objectives of the Second Revolution. With the assassination of Sheikh Mujib in 1975, BAKSAL was dissolved.
