Auf der einen Seite steht die „Entdeckung der sichtbaren Welt“, die Erforschung der Wirklichkeit und ihre getreue Wiedergabe mit neuen malerischen Mitteln; auf der anderen die Einführung der Handlung in religiöse Stoffe, fast als handele es sich um tableaux vivants aus dem Passionsspiel, und vor allem erstmals der überzeugende und unkonventionelle Ausdruck der Gefühle.

On the one hand, their painting allowed for the “discovery of the visible world”, the inspection of reality and its ensuing faithful reproduction by relying on new painting techniques; on the other, a new sense of action was developed between religious figures, as if they were tableaux vivants drawing from sacred representations; above all, it allowed for the first convincing and non conventional expression of feelings.

D’un côté la “découverte du monde visible”, l’enquête de la réalité et sa fidèle reproduction avec de nouveaux moyens picturaux ; de l’autre, l’introduction du sens de l’action chez les sujets religieux, comme s’il s’agissait quasiment de tableaux vivants issus de représentations sacrées et surtout, pour la première fois, avec l’expression convaincante et non conventionnelle des émotions.
