The fairly rare sandwich tern started breeding here in 1996, expanding into a colony of 2335 nests by 1998. Both islands and the mudflats to the south are Natura 2000 areas and fall under the Nature Protection Act.

De grote stern vestigde zich in 1996 als broedvogel op Rottumerplaat. In 1998 waren er 2335 paartjes van deze vrij zeldzame vogel. Beide eilanden en de wadplaten ten zuiden ervan zijn natuurgebieden.
