As with other albedo features on Mars, the name Cydonia was drawn from classical antiquity, in this case from Cydonia or Kydonia (/sɪˈdoʊniə/; Ancient Greek: Κυδωνία; Latin: Cydonia), a historic polis (or "city-state") on the island of Crete.
