Syria currently suffers from a demographic imbalance due to the displacement of a large number of inhabitants of the occupied Syrian Golan since 1967, the presence in Syria of about 0.5 million Palestinian refugees following the Israeli occupation of the Arab, Palestinian territories in 1948 and 157,141 Iraqi refugees registered by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees out of the more than 1.3 million Iraqis who have become refugees since the American occupation of Iraq in 2003, according to the report issued by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in April 2011.
