The invention relates to a method for protecting the soil (6) against contamination caused by the contents of a storage tank (7, 8) present in or on the ground, wherein a sealing system forming a seal at its bottom side (8) is placed in adjoining relationship with the surface of the storage tank present in or on the ground, which sealing system is built up of one or more layers (1, 2, 3), with the layer (1) adjoining the bottom surface (8) of the storage tank consisting of an oil-impregnated pulverized mineral having a hydrophobic surface.
