Per quanto riguarda la nomenclatura greca, come subito dopo risulterà evidente, essa è molto varia, anche se presso i più antichi Greci non troviamo alcun nome peculiare, in quanto designarono questa specie con il comune vocabolo órnithes, per cui anche Mirtilo in Ateneo chiama solo le galline órnithas e orníthia - uccelletti.
