A flash memory device typically consists of one or more flash memory chips (each holding many flash memory cells) along with a separate flash memory controller chip. The NAND type is found primarily in memory cards, USB flash drives, solid-state drives (those produced in 2009 or later), and similar products, for general storage and transfer of data. NAND or NOR flash memory is also often used to store configuration data in numerous digital products, a task previously made possible by EEPROM or battery-powered static RAM.

หน่วยความจําแฟลชพัฒนาต่อมาจาก EEPROM (หน่วยความจําแบบรอมที่สามารถลบข้อมูลได้) ปัจจุบันหน่วยความจําแฟลชมีด้วยกันสองชนิดคือ หน่วยความจําแฟลชชนิด NAND และหน่วยความจําแฟลชชนิด NOR ซึ่งเป็น NAND และ NOR เป็นชื่อของโลจิกเกตที่เซลล์หน่วยความจําแฟลชแต่ละชนิดใช้ หน่วยความจําแฟลชชนิดที่ได้รับความนิยมในปัจจุบันคือ ชนิด NAND และใช้เป็นหน่วยความจําใน แฟลชไดรฟ์, โซลิดสเตตไดรฟ์, เมโมรีการ์ด และมีผลิตภัณฑ์อื่นๆ อีกมาก โดยถูกใช้เป็นหลักในอุปกรณ์พกพาเนื่องจากสามารถทนทานต่อแรงกระแทกได้ดีกว่าฮาร์ดดิสก์มาก
