وقد تضررت التنمية في جزر القمر على نحو بالغ من الاختناقات التي تتسم بها الحالة في البلدان الجزرية الصغيرة، وهي السوق الداخلية شديدة الضيق والتفتت، وعدم كفاية الأراضي الصالحة للزراعة، والموارد الطبيعية المحدودة، والاعتماد المفرط على الأسعار الخارجية، والبعد عن دوائر التسويق التجاري الدولية الأمر الذي يؤدي إلى ارتفاع تكاليف النقل وعدم مرونة العرض والطلب على حد سواء.

The difficulties typical of any small island developing country — very limited and fragmented domestic market, insufficient arable land and few natural resources, heavy dependence on external prices, distance from international trade routes leading to high transportation costs and lack of flexibility in both supply and demand — have greatly affected the country’s development.
