The most productive are the black soils (chernozems), corresponding to the once-dominant prairie grassland of the Red River Valley and southwestern Manitoba. They differ in texture from fine in the former to medium in the latter. Coarse black soils are found in the old Assiniboine delta and the Souris Valley, the former extending from Portage la Prairie to Brandon.

Le sol noir (sol chernozémique) est le plus fertile; on le trouve dans les pâturages, autrefois prédominants, de la vallée de la rivière Rouge, où sa texture est particulièrement fine, et dans le sud-ouest du Manitoba. Le sol présente une texture plus grossière dans l’ancien delta formé par l’Assiniboine, qui s’étend de Portage la Prairie à Brandon, et à Souris Valley.
