It is the main sports center of Colombia, being the only Colombian city to have hosted the Pan American Games (in 1971), the 1992 World Wrestling Championships, ninth edition of the World Games in 2013, and will host the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 2014, and the World Youth Championships in Athletics in 2015.

Es además uno de los principales centros deportivos de Colombia. Ha sido la única ciudad colombiana en organizar los Juegos Panamericanos, siete Paradas Mundiales de Ciclismo en Pista, el Campeonato Mundial de Patinaje, y la IX edición de los Juegos Mundiales, siendo la primer ciudad latinoamericana en ser anfitriona de este certamen.
