Groundbreaking began August 24, 1993, less than a year after the hurricane, and the circuit officially opened in November 1995. The track opened as a four-turn rectangular-oval, though initially the sharp, flat turns and aprons made passing overly difficult and the track’s unforgiving geometry led to numerous crashes.
