The study is based on the constructivist theory, which provides the theoretical framework for the content analysis of the material. According to the results, healthcare social workers consider themselves to have two main roles when working with stillbirth: a technical-administrative role and a humanist-emancipatory role.

Aineisto on analysoitu teoriasidonnaisen sisällönanalyysin menetelmällä. Analyysin viitekehyksenä on toiminut konstruktiivinen tiedonkäsitys. Tutkielman tulosten mukaan terveyssosiaalityöntekijät kuvasivat tekevänsä työtä kohtukuoleman parissa kahdesta pääroolista: teknis-hallinnollisesta ja inhimillis-emansipatorisesta roolista.
