The present invention relates to a large two-stroke diesel engine (1) of the cross-head type in which the exhaust valves (11) are hydraulically actuated by providing hydraulic actuators (19) associated with each of the exhaust valves (11) with high pressure hydraulic fluid. Fuel oil or heavy fuel oil can be used as hydraulic fluid.
