বিচারপতি আবু সাদাত মোহাম্মদ সায়েমের অবসর গ্রহণের প্রেক্ষিতে বাংলাদেশের মহামান্য রাষ্ট্রপতি বাংলাদেশের ২য় প্রধান বিচারপতি হিসাবে সৈয়দ এ. বি. মাহমুদ হোসেনকে নিয়োগ প্রদান করেন এবং তিনি ১৯৭৫ সালের ১৮ নভেম্বর তারিখে প্রধান বিচারপতি হিসাবে শপথ গ্রহণ করেন ও ১৯৭৮ সালের ৩১ জানুয়ারি তারিখে উক্ত পদ হতে অবসর গ্রহণ করেন।

In the context of the retirement of Justice Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem, the honorable President of Bangladesh appointed Syed A. B. Mahmud Hossain as Chief Justice and on 18 November 1975, he took the oath as Chief Justice.
