ومن بين المشروعات التجريبية المهمة التي انصب تركيزها على هذه الأنشطة مشروع الزئبق العالمي التابع لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة للتنمية الصناعية، الذي يتم تنفيذه بالتعاون مع مرفق البيئة العالمية، وبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي، ومنظمة الأمم المتحدة للتنمية الصناعية، وهو المشروع الذي يحاول إزالة العقبات أمام إدخال تكنولوجيات أنظف لتعدين الذهب بواسطة الحرفيين وعلى النطاق الصغير.(

One important pilot project that has focused on such activities has been the UNIDO Global Mercury Project, a collaboration between the GEF, UNDP, and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), which strives to remove barriers to the introduction of cleaner artisanal gold mining and extraction technologies.

Un proyecto experimental importante que ha prestado especial atención a ese tipo de actividades ha sido el Proyecto mundial sobre el mercurio de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo Industrial (ONUDI); ese Proyecto es una colaboración entre el FMAM, el PNUD y la ONUDI con el objetivo de eliminar los obstáculos que impiden introducir tecnologías menos contaminantes para la minería y la extracción de oro artesanales .
