The Sinaloa crow (Corvus sinaloae) appears to be genetically extremely close to this bird and can be considered the western form of it though the voice is quite different, indeed a third species, the fish crow (Corvus ossifragus) of the southeastern United States appears to be very closely related to them also and the three may be considered a superspecies.

Su área de distribución norte llega a Brownsville en el sur de Texas, donde es sabido que anida. El Cuervo de Sinaloa parece ser genéticamente extremadamente parecido a esta ave, y puede considerarse la forma occidental de él, salvo la voz muy diferente, otra 3a especie, Corvus ossifragus del sudeste marítimo de Estados Unidos también muy emparentado entre sí y consideradas a las tres como superespecies.
