Professor Laakso earned a doctorate in social sciences from the University of Helsinki in 1975, and in 1986 he graduated as Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kuopio. He was appointed Professor at the University of Kuopio Department of Medicine in 1995.

Laakso on väitellyt yhteiskuntatieteiden tohtoriksi vuonna 1975 Helsingin yliopistossa ja lääketieteen tohtoriksi vuonna 1986 Kuopion yliopistossa.Laakso on toiminut Kuopion yliopistossa ja sittemmin Itä-Suomen yliopistossa sisätautiopin professorina vuodesta 1995 alkaen.
