Besides being one of the first 3 laboratories to obtain the DNA sequence of the EGF receptor, they showed that the EGF receptor gene was amplified, rearranged and over-expressed in many cancer cells including squamous cell carcinomas, and with Doug Lowy showed that over-expression of the EGF receptor in the presence of EGF is sufficient to transform normal 3T3 cells and therefore is a proto-oncogene.

La siguiente fase I/II de ensayos clínicos usando el mismo producto, confirmó los resultados del primer ensayo, demostrando que los pacientes con cáncer pancreático en fase IV tenían un tiempo de supervivencia de casi el doble del tiempo. En todos estos ensayos se usó sulfato de celulosa, en adición a los claros efectos antitumorales, las cápsulas fueron bien toleradas y no hubo reacciones adversas, tales como respuestas inmunes a las cápsulas, demostrando la naturaleza biocompatible del sulfato de celulosa.
