ورأت اللجنة الاقتصادية لأمريكا اللاتينية ومنطقة البحر الكاريبي، التابعة للأمم المتحدة، أنه يتعين على صغار السن أن يكملوا التعليم الثانوي لكي تكون نسبة احتمال تفاديهم الفقر 80 في المائة، وأكد البحث الذي قامت به تلك اللجنة فيما بعد أن نسبة تتراوح بين 72 و96 في المائة من الأسر التي يكون الزوجان فيها قد حصلا على تعليم تقل مدته عن تسع سنوات، تعيش في الفقر(54).

The United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has found that young people have to complete secondary education to achieve an 80 per cent probability of avoiding poverty, and its subsequent research has confirmed that between 72 and 96 per cent of families where the parents have less than nine years of education live in poverty.
