وتتميز هذه الأصناف بتنوع دورة حياتها، بدءا من سمك التون الوثاب الذي يتميز بدورة حياته القصيرة وارتفاع إخصابه وتوزعه الواسع النطاق في المياه الاستوائية والمعتدلة، وحتى سمك التون الأزرق الزعنف الذي يعمر طويلا ويتكاثر في مرحلة متأخرة ويتميز بدقة أنماط تكاثره وارتحاله.
