Further increase in the extracellular Ca++-concentration (5–10 mM/l) leads to an inhibition of the relaxation and, for a short period, to an irregular fibrillatory activity. After 10–20 min in the Ca++-rich medium, cells stop beating in a highly contracted state showing all the signs of an irreversible cell damage.
