This method for cutting an object to be processed is provided with: a step for forming a reformed area (71) within a substrate (31) along a plurality of cutting lines (51) by setting the rear surface (31b) of a monocrystal sapphire substrate (31) as the incident surface for a laser light (L) within the substrate (31) and aligning a focal point (P) of the laser light (L) within the substrate (31), and causing the focal point (P) to move relatively from one side to the other side along each of the plurality of cutting lines (51), which are set so as to be parallel on the a side and the rear side (31b) of the substrate (31); and a step for subsequently extending a crack (81) originating in the reformed area (71) and cutting the object to be processed along the lines (51).
