A leading light of French polar research, in the lineage of Commander Jean-Baptiste Charcot, captain of the Pourquoi-Pas ?, he is now living in Dieppe, Normandy, and getting ready to finish his life in Uummannaq, northwest coast of Greenland, where a Jean Malaurie Museum has been created that features a reconstitution of his former wintering base in a peat house.

Figure de proue de la recherche polaire française dans la lignée du Commandant Charcot, capitaine du Pourquoi-Pas ?, il habite aujourd'hui à Dieppe, en Normandie, et se prépare à vivre la fin de sa vie à Uummannaq, sur la côte nord-ouest du Groenland, où un musée Jean Malaurie a été créé dans une maison de tourbe reconstituant sa base d'hivernage, à Siorapaluk, en 1950-1951.
