This pony, belonging to the group of cantabrianpyrenean ponies, is closely related with the Asturcon Pony, the Losino Horse, the Galician Mountain Horse, the Landais and the Merens. In this way, French Pottok, whose Studbook standard and status present very significant differences with the Basque Pony-Pottoka of this side of the Pyrenees, is considered as another independent horse breed.

Este poni, se puede enclavar dentro de los ponis cantabro-pirenaicos, estrechamente emparentado con el Asturcón, el Losino, el Caballo de Monte Gallego, el Landés y el Pottok francés, cuyo estándar racial y situación, presenta diferencias muy significativas con el Poni Vasco de este lado de los Pirineos y que, actualmente, se considera como otra raza independiente.
