সৈয়দ শামসুল হুদা বাংলা সরকারের নিকট থেকে জমি ক্রয় করে কলকাতায় মুসলমানদের জন্য একটি সরকারি কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠা করার জন্য ৯০০,০০০ রুপি মঞ্জুর করেন। প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠান স্থগিত রাখা হয়। ১৯২৬ সালে যখন আবুল কাশেম ফজল-উল-হক শিক্ষা মন্ত্রী হন তখন উদ্বোধন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।
