وفيما يتعلق بكون الأمية تركز على إكساب مجموعة من المهارات، تجدر الإشارة إلى أن تلك المهارات تتمثل في المهارات المعرفية للقراءة والكتابة، وتطور الفكر الخاص بالمنهج المتبع لإكساب تلك المهارات من منهج صوتي لتعلم التهجي ومفردات اللغة والقراءة إلى منهج يركز على الأساليب التثقيفية وليس الشفهية فحسب للتأثير على ملكات الإدراك عند البشر حتى يتسنى توفير إطار نقدي للتفكير التحليلي.

Concerning literacy as the acquisition of a set of skills, we may note here that those skills are represented by the cognitive skills of reading and writing, and thinking about the method followed to impart those skills has evolved from a phonetic method of learning spelling, the words of the language and reading to a method focusing on educational methods—not exclusively verbal methods—of influencing the learning faculties of human beings with a view to enabling them to acquire a critical framework for analytic thought.

En relación con la alfabetización como la adquisición de un conjunto de aptitudes, cabe señalar aquí que esas aptitudes están representadas por la capacidad de leer y escribir, al tiempo que el método seguido para desarrollar esas aptitudes ha evolucionado de un método fonético de aprender a deletrear las palabras de un idioma y a leer a un método centrado en medios educativos —no exclusivamente verbales— de influir en las facultades de aprendizaje de los seres humanos a fin de que puedan adquirir un marco crucial de pensamiento analítico.

S’agissant de l’alphabétisation en tant qu’acquisition d’un ensemble de compétences, on peut noter que ces compétences sont représentées par les compétences cognitives de la lecture et l’écriture, et la réflexion sur la méthode suivie pour transmettre ces compétences a évolué, passant d’une méthode phonétique d’apprentissage de l’orthographe des mots et de la lecture à une méthode d »inspiration pédagogique, et non exclusivement verbale, qui influe sur les facultés d’apprentissage des êtres humains pour leur permettre d’acquérir un cadre critique permettant la pensée analytique.
