বাংলার বাউল বিশ্বখ্যাত। এই ধরনের সংগীতজ্ঞরা আঠারো, উনিশ, বিশ শতক এবং এই শতকেও ভারত তথা বিদেশে খমক, একতারা এবং দোতারা নিয়ে বাউল লোক সংগীত গেয়ে থাকেন। 'বাউল' শব্দটা এসেছে সংস্কৃত বতুল থেকে, যার অর্থ পবিত্রতা অসাধরণত্বে উৎসাহ দেয়। বাউলরা হলেন অতিন্দ্রিয় চারণ কবির একটা গোষ্ঠী। এটা বলা হয়, তাঁরা ভীষণভাবে কর্তাভজাদের হিন্দু তান্ত্রিক অংশ তথা সুফি অংশের দ্বারা প্রভাবান্বিত। বাউলরা সফর করেন তাঁদের অন্তরের আদর্শকে খোঁজার জন্যে, যাকে বলা হয় মনের মানুষ (হৃদয়ের মানুষ)। বিশ্ববিখ্যাত বাউল সংগীত শিল্পী হলেন পূর্ণ দাস বাউল।

The Bauls of Bengal were an order of musicians in 18th, 19th and early 20th century India who played a form of music using a khamak, ektara and dotara. The word Baul comes from Sanskrit batul meaning divinely inspired insanity. They are a group of Hindu mystic minstrels. They are thought to have been influenced greatly by the Hindu tantric sect of the Kartabhajas as well as by Sufi sects. Bauls travel in search of the internal ideal, Maner Manush (Man of the Heart).
