চৌম্বকীয় ঝড় ও সাবস্ট্রোম যখন ঘটে, তখন বাইরের দিকের চৌম্বকমণ্ডল থেকে এবং বিশেষ করে ম্যাগনিটোটেইল থেকে আধানযুক্ত কণাগুলো বেরিয়ে যায়, যার দিক হতে পারে আয়নমণ্ডলের দিকে, যেখানে বায়ুমণ্ডলীয় অনুগুলো হয়ে থাকে উত্তেজিত ও আধানযুক্ত, এর ফলশ্রুতিতে সৃষ্টি হয় আরোরা।
