Η ιδέα όμως εγκαταλήφθηκε και στη θέση της κατασκευάστηκε μια πιο απλή, πέτρινη και χαμηλότερου κόστους, οδός που ονομάστηκε Δίολκος, μέσω της οποίας γινόταν η μεταφορά εμπορευμάτων, αλλά και μικρών πλοίων, από τη μία πλευρά του Ισθμού στην άλλη για να αποφεύγεται ο περίπλους της Πελοποννήσου. Τα απομεινάρια της Διόλκου είναι ορατά μέχρι και σήμερα στην δυτική πλευρά του Ισθμού.

The project was abandoned and Periander instead constructed a simpler and less costly overland portage road, named the Diolkos or stone carriageway, along which ships could be towed from one side of the isthmus to the other.
