ECMWF’s new strategic objectives include: increasing the horizontal resolution of the global ‘ensemble’ forecasting system to 5km, more than three times the existing resolution; developing an improved, high-resolution Earth system model to better take into account the complex interactions between the atmosphere, the ocean, sea ice and land, as well as aerosols and ozone; and implementing a scalable approach to coding across numerical weather prediction (NWP) processes to meet future computing power and big data challenges. ECMWF director general Florence Rabier said, “Given the greater likelihood of life-threatening climate change impacts on the Earth’s weather, we will harness rapidly advancing data availability and technology to stretch the accuracy and range of predictions further and faster.”

Entre los nuevos objetivos estratégicos del CEPMMP podemos citar los siguientes: aumentar la resolución horizontal del sistema global de previsiones «en conjunto» a 5 km, lo que significa más del triple de la resolución actual; desarrollar un modelo de sistema terrestre de alta resolución mejorado que tenga más en cuenta las complejas interacciones entre la atmósfera, el océano, el hielo marino y la tierra, así como los aerosoles y el ozono; e implementar un enfoque cuantificable de codificación a través de procesos de predicción meteorológica numérica (PMN) para adaptarse a los desafíos futuros de la capacidad computacional y la ciencia de del cambio climático, debemos contar con datos más rápidamente disponibles y con una tecnología que aumente y agilice aún más la precisión y la gama de predicciones».
