Since the late nineteenth century, and especially in the twentieth century, proliferated historical phonology studies related with the history of the Spanish phonology, as has been the case of Nevertheless, in the last years of the twentieth century and in the beginning of the twenty-first century it is suggested some lack in the studies of historical phonetics and phonology, that is why it seems necessary a renewed reflection of the evolutionary theory. The absence of treaties encoders before Nebrija's work has involved the use of other philological instruments to untangle the Castilian phonic features from its origins to the reign of the Austria’s kings.

Desde finales del siglo XIX, y sobre todo en el siglo XX, proliferaron estudios sobre fonología histórica que delimitaron los estadios evolutivos de la fonología castellana, como ha sido el caso de Menéndez Pidal, Amado Alonso, Dámaso Alonso, Rafael Lapesa, Joan Coromines, Emilio Alarcos o Diego Catalán, entre otros. Pese a ello, en los últimos años del siglo XX y en los primeros del siglo XXI se deja entrever cierta carencia en los estudios de fonética y fonología históricas, razón por la cual parece necesaria una revisión y reflexión renovadas de la teoría evolutiva. La ausencia de tratados codificadores antes de la obra de Nebrija ha llevado consigo el empleo de otros instrumentos filológicos para desentrañar los rasgos fónicos castellanos desde sus orígenes hasta el reinado de los Austria.
