Debido a la enorme biodiversidad de la flora colombiana se pensaría que existe una amplia investigación en su farmacología y fitoquímica, pero la realidad es que existen pocas especies que se hayan validado mediante estudios químicos y biológicos; por ello, son muy bajos el aprovechamiento medicinal más generalizado y la explotación económica de dicha flora.
