Tyto změny výrazně kontrastují s populačními trendy předchozího období, kdy v naší společnosti převládal tzv. socialistický model reprodukčního chování s vysokou a časnou sňatečností a na ní navazující porodností, ovšem v oblasti zdraví charakterizovaný několika negativními rysy, a to zhoršováním zdravotního stavu obyvatelstva a rostoucí úmrtností.
