Nach der osmanischen Eroberung behielt die Stadt offiziell ihren Namen Konstantinopel und wurde erst am 28. März 1930 auf den türkischen volkstümlichen Namen İstanbul umbenannt.

It is sometimes said that the name Istanbul comes from the Greek words stin poli which means "at the City". This is a historical myth.
