At present the indigenous lands are threatened on various fronts: by the expansion of large agribusiness enterprises, by plans for mineral prospecting and mining, by the huge development of eco-tourism and, in the case of the Canton de Buenos Aires, by the construction of a giant dam to generate hydroelectric power in the valley of Rio Grande de Térraba.

En la actualidad diversos frentes amenazan las tierras indígenas: expansión de grandes empresas agroindustriales, proyectos de exploración y explotación minera, megadesarrollos ecoturísticos y, en el caso particular del Cantón de Buenos Aires, la construcción de una inmensa represa para la generación de energía hidroeléctrica en el valle del Río Grande de Térraba.
