Fish range in size from the huge whale shark to the tiny stout infantfish. Fish species diversity is roughly divided equally between marine (oceanic) and freshwater ecosystems. Coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific constitute the center of diversity for marine fishes, whereas continental freshwater fishes are most diverse in large river basins of tropical rainforests, especially the Amazon, Congo, and Mekong basins.

นอกจากนี้แล้ว ปลากุแลยังเป็นปลาที่มีวิวัฒนาการมาจากปลาในสกุล "Harengula" ที่อยู่ในวงศ์เดียวกัน โดยมีลักษณะแทบจะแยกกันไม่ออก โดยมีความต่างกันที่เกล็ดเท่านั้น จัดเป็นปลาผิวน้ํา ที่อาศัยอยู่รวมกันเป็นฝูงใหญ่ ลูกปลาขนาดเล็กอาจอยู่รวมใกล้ชายฝั่งทะเล, ปากแม่น้ํา หรือลากูนได้ พบกระจายพันธุ์ในทะเลและมหาสมุทรเขตร้อนและเขตอบอุ่น ทั้งมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก, มหาสมุทรอินเดีย, ทะเลเมดิเตอเรเนียน และมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิก
